18/12/2009Pensioners seem to be able to cope, why can't the young of today?

Old age pensioners in Kelty and other places in Scotland, seem to be able to cope with hardships of life more than youngsters of today, take most Scottish pensioners are on £5,000 a year basic state pension, B.A. workers are on £35,000, and £50,000 a year. And yet these workers wanted to strike because they hadnt enough wages and many pensioners backed them up, wonder if they will back up pensioners.

Why I think most young people cant cope is they cant cook a meal, its all carry-outs and takeaways.will be lucky if you can get any of them to actually be able to make a meal from bare essentials. How many can darn their stockings, how many can knit a scarf,in fact many would be completely lost without a tin opener and microwave.most grandparents can cope as they struggled through the war torn years in Scotland, and their children also your parents.Dont you ever wonder how pensioners can cope.I remember once long ago when I stayed in Kelty, I came home one day and my daughter and her pal were trying to make batter to make potato fritters they had seen on TV, they were using custard powder,to make batter yellow,I said thats not how its done, its eggs that make batter yellow and was glad to show them what to do.

What is your favourite meal made by your parents and grandparents that you can do and teach your children so they can teach their children.
I very rarely eat take aways. I much prefer to cook a meal from scratch, to the point where I'm lost on what to do when I have to cook packet food. I love to sew, recently got a sewing machine for the very purpose of making dresses. Actually, my 28 year old friend is an embroiderer also, and is part of an embroiderers guild. I can't knit a scarf admittedly, but that's got a lot to do with me having arthritis in my hands rather than I just don't want to, because I used to knit with my friend. I do have an electric tin opener, but that's because of the arthritis. Just can't use a manual one anymore. I barely use my microwave, but if I do, it's just to steam vegetables, since my kitchen is tiny ad I have no room for a big steamer.

Having said all that though, I do realise myself and my friends are rare cases these days, so I do understand where you're coming from. Today's lifestyle is for the consumer, it's all use it the throw it away. OR get this thingy or person to do this task for us. I was lucky my parents and grandparents brought me up to do things for myself because one day they won't be there.

Have your say:
