Local victory in annual coal race

  • Winner John Hargreaves Jr at the finish with his dad, John Sr
  • Ladies' race winner Hazel Porter, with young daughter Ruby
  • Large crowds cheered the runners home

There was local glory in the annual coal race on Saturday, as Kelty man John Hargreaves Jr carried the 50kg sack of coal to victory in the Scottish Coal-Carrying Championships, leading the field home through the streets in the rain.

No fewer than 36 athletes, 30 men and six ladies lined up at the start, with entries coming from as far afield as Ireland, the Czech Republic, the World Champion from Yorkshire, and local Councillors Willie Sullivan and Willie Rennie.

John's winning time was four minutes 39 seconds, bringing him in comfortably ahead of the field, around 15 seconds clear of his nearest rival.

The ladies' race was won by Dunfermline woman Hazel Porter, who took her sixth win in the race, after missing last year's event giving birth to daughter Ruby, who was on hand to greet her victorious mum at the finishing line.

John Redmond says: Congratulations to the Hargreaves family again, definitely great sportsmen and women.

Just Jock says

What about Kelty games having another famous thing the Fife had, Was the Climbing of the "Greasy Pole" like they had yearly at Burntisland games.

I can remember me and John Hargraves seeing that when we were youngsters, Climbers try to climb a heavily greased telegraph pole and on top is a £50 note for winners - wasn't many of them.
