What I would like to know is words like keek gleekit and all the others are they slang versions of English, or a dialect of some sort, or the remains of Gaelic or Scottish.  When I went to school I could never understand why teachers would reprimand you for using such words, yet we were made learn Robert Burns which was written in a similar way.  I really dinny ken!

Just Jock says

Keek derived from keekers yer eyes use to see, gleekit has always been a scots word, many words used, are mixture from old scots language used by gypsies, now known as Scottish travellers, who still use in their own language called the "Cant",mixture of old scots, gaelic and doric, example Glimmer is fire, deeklys matches, sark is a shirt, calshius is trousers, cludgi is a toilet,a good book to read this language is called The Life of Sandy Stewart,my son and I stayed in many camps he stayed on and to understand life with them you had to learn the Cant so others didnt know what was said, this book has about 8 pages at back showing a lexicon of the language, another good site is Tour Scotland there is a lexicon of the language used by Fifers.

Two Languages in Scotland, Lowland Scots and Gaelic and now we are told to speak English.Mind you Lowland Scots is old English.

Anyway John, I will say one thing I don't think gypsies ever came to Scotland in any great numbers?Originaly from Romania? I think they were more down in England. What we had in Scotland are Tinkers, people from the time of the clearences who were forced to move on so never settled long in one place. The name Tinker, people who at first worked with metal so were given that name from the sound the metal made on their carts.

The price Scotland paid for being part of the union with England to be anglicized and be told to speak England's language

A good read Jess Smith, I have all her books Tears for the Tinkers. The yellow on the Broom Betsy Whyte, and Sheila Stewart with Pilgrims of the Mist
