What Danger lies under your House

by Just Jock

When I stayed in Kelty the first 36 years of my life from 1944,I used to wonder what the council would eventually do with all the land they had used to make rubbish tips, in fact being an old bottle collector I often was hoping they would dig them up soon, and hopefully find old Kelty bottles for Geo Watson with a fish on them or rare pots from the numerous dairies, but councilmen I approached then said no way would these areas of land ever be dug up or houses built on them.

They could never build on such land they used to say as to much methane gas caused by underground workings and old rubbish and yet this year I drove through Kelty and saw  new housing estates on the land that before was not safe for housing, can anyone tell me what suddenly made all the land safe, Rubbish carts used to take cartloads of rubbish and dump behind Playing park at rear of Kelty Primary, and at rear where British Legion was,up back where Dewars Row was,two fields down Shields shortcut, how can all that land be reclaimed to build housing unless on floating foundations,,I wouldnt like to stay where a methane bomb was underneath any housing and many subsiding areas, I remember what happened to the council house that sunk into the ground where Blair street came onto Drum Road.

There was over 35 mineworkings in and around Kelty,I remember Oakfield Secondary School there was many classes that sat at angles and pencils would roll off desks, because building was sinking into mineworkings , one of reasons many of old houses were removed down Oakfield street and in area at rear of old Sawmill.

What Danger is under your House in Kelty.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
