I can help with part of question 25 if thats any good? Kit Johnston(not Johnson!) was my Great Grandad, Jock(the butchers)faither, he came to kelty in the 1920s to mine coal and make his fortune! He was a big, stout man who said very little but worked hard. I cant remember exactly when he bought the pub in cansdam but, i know it was before he went off to fight in the war. He became a champion boxer during his time and came back from the war unscathed and unpronounced, on the night ma Granma(Effie) was giving birth to ma Great Uncle Wullie! Nobody was expecting him, apart from their wee dug who had howled aw day then met him a mile or so before he reached home!!! The dug had sensed his arrival. Apparently, he was a 'one punch man' and after closing the pub wan night he heard a commotion doon the dam! On investigation of this he found two locals of kelty(hardy men!) drowning another man, i wont mention names, in the dam. He knocked each one out with a single punch, phoned the police and saved the mans life! Ma Grandad, as a boy, had asked him later; "Dad, what wid yi hae done if they'd got back up again?" He said "Well son, a wid've run like hell!" But he never ever had tae. Noo, a kent he was pretty cool but a didny realise he was a prominent man in kelty!! But he was a miner, publican, soldier, boxer, father and grandfather who was loved and respected so it should'nt be such a surprise to me!!!

Maurice you are right, I can remember Benny the Chipper he came to my street Maple Terrace on a Sunday night and we were allowed to get chips from Benny's chipper to watch Wagon Train on the telly. Maurice did you live in Maple Terrace? I lived at 12 Maple Terrace in the pre-fabs - no longer there, of course. Benny the chipper was great I remember getting a fish supper, a penny worth of peas and a pickled onion all wrapped up in newspaper!! Delicious.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
