Mariapola Macovaz says

Well Jeanette thanks for all your information and answers to so many questions.

I do think, however, that you were a bit harsh with regards to your description of Oakfield Secondary School as being a secondary level school for pupils who failed the Eleven +.

I went to Oakfield Secondary School and do not feel a failure. After primary education there is secondary education and then one can continue on to tertiary education, not compulsory, of course.

Thankfully, the big whits in the education system have seen the light of day and now following primary education ALL students progress to secondary education with decisions being made according to students' academic ability and desire as to whether they continue on to tertiary level education.

In the end it was all a numbers game. Every year a certain number of places were available for students to pursue a tertiary education and so students, starting at age 7 in primary education level, were divided into tertiary and non-tertiary students.

I knew a very good friend who was picked for tertiary level direction, however at the end of secondary education he decided not to proceed to tertiary level education due to financial problems in the family.

Ah well Jeanette would I be correct in assuming that you went to Beath High (its all in a word!!)

I was particularly pleased to read your response to question 34 - Swallows - I have been trying to remember that for weeks - There was a clothes type factory in Cowdenbeath - I don' t suppose you can remember what that was called.

Thanks again.

Just Jock says

Oakfield wasnt for people who failed 11plus, I passed mine with colours, Oakfield was same type of school as Beath just was a local school, Beath enforced uniforms etc Oakfield didnt, you had choice what school to go to whether passed or failed.

If you passed you started in Class F and all way back to A,until leaving, if you didnt pass you started in B Practical, many great people came from Class B practical.

I have to admit I was only good at Crafts, Music,I was hopeless at technical subjects, in fact without help from Albert Stockdale who helped me a lot in Maths,Geometry, and Andrew Muir help in Technical drawing and algebra, I wouldn't have got anywhere, maybe teacher explaining was wrong.

But again Thanks lads.

Henry Phillips says

I always understood Oakfield to be a Junior Secondary School (mainly  technical ), whereas Beath (more academic) and Moss-side (girls only) were what were known as Senior Secondary Schools.   The factor deciding placement was the results of the 11+ exam (at least, when I went to Kelty Public in the '50s ...)

Mariapola Macovaz says

John

When I was at Oakfield Secondary school the curriculum available to students was certainly not the same as the curriculum available to students at Beath High School.

Beath High offered subjects that allowed students to prepare for University entrance education or highers as they were known at that time. Oakfield Secondary school did not provide this.

Students at Oakfield left age 16 and there was no choice available to continue on and prepare for a possible entrance into University.

After finishing Kelty Public school the Education Department advised students which secondary level education they would continue on with and a choice was not offered.

I enjoyed my time at Oakfield very much and am still in contact with friends I had when I was at Oakfield.

 1896 0n school.

Just Jock says

Plenty people at Oakfield went to University, when I passed my 11 plus I was told I had a choice Beath High or Oakfield and I along with other chose Oakfield its was in village and my pals who didnt pass went there also, plus you werent forced to wear a uniform, my parents were just poor mining folk,I found people who went to beath many thought they were better than others.and sadly just as thick as many in Ballingry,,Teachers at Beath couldnt have been that brilliant many were at Oakfield first, George Robertson, Harry Gilmour were two, Mr Terris another one.most of rest retired they were at school when my older cousins went to Oakfield,

Martin Nicol says

Was Alan Wells the famous athlete and was his vest no.8?

Just Jock says

Ye kin find all the answers in books about Kelty interesting reading.

Jeanette Lynch says

My apologies to Mariapola re comments about Oakfield School, I never intended to make anyone that attended Oakfield feel any less valued than the pupils who went to Beath High School. In fact many of my older family members attended Oakfield and yes you're right, I did go to Beath but a higher education doesn't make the person. I believe life's lessons do that!!

OWEN OHARE says

Hi Mariapola, you are a bit younger than me so probably don`t know me but maybe knew some of my cousine of which I had many, one was Esther O`Hare married to Ted Goebell who lived in the Prefabs at Maple Terrace she had a daughter Margaret and a son Edward who were probably ages with you.I am also married to a Kelty Girl Rita Mcdonald the same one John Redmond mentioned as the Kelty Clippie who used to go to Mario`s Cafe,we also emigrated and now live in Port Kennedy in Western Australia, what Part are you in?

Anyway I think the Clothing Factory in Cowdenbeath you are thinking of was Babygrow.

I was also in Benarty when I went to Oakfield.

All the Best

Owen.

OWEN OHARE says

Janet Gorman nee Pryde says

Hi Owen,

I came to Aust.[Vic.] in 1963-age 12..I went to Kelty public 1956-1962, then Beath high before emigrating. I noticed my Dads name in one of your postings, although I remember there were a few Prydes in & around Kelty. He was Alexander [Sandy]., originally from Kinross but my Mum was Mary Inch, daughter of John & Jenny of Oak St. I had Inch cousins--Barbara, John, Robert & Helen & I'm interested to know of any connections at all. I lived a while in Centre St, then to Westcroft Way.

I also have been back in touch with Lola Corrieri whose family had the shop on the cnr of Main & Keltyhill avenue.

On a posting by Jeanette Lynch, I saw she had said about being in the same class as Tom [Toshie] Renwick---well I was too---at primary school. I remember some of my class mate names but they'd have married names now, so would appreciate anyone reading this to respond. There was Helen Hart, Gillian Kolber, Sheena Lamb, John Syme [whose sister & I correspond]--had a neighbor called Tom Hailstones in Westcroft Way-- but my memory needs jogging. Australia is a long way from keeping ones finger on the pulse.

Regards  Janis

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
