A brief history of Kelty
17 Mar 2009 Kelty is a former mining village in the heartland of Fife's former coalfields, 2 miles north of Cowdenbeath. Today the community has a population of 6,000, and has become a popular location for housing development for commuters to Edinburgh, helped by its proximity to the M90 motorway.
The town was established in 1872 with the establishment of the Fife Coal Company, and grew rapidly as the mining industry expanded. Despite the departure of these traditional industries, today Kelty is growing again and boasts a strong community spirit and identity, such as in the local junior football side Kelty Hearts.
Here are just a few key dates in the history of the town.
1872 - Fife Coal Company established
1930 - Kelty railway station closed
1931 - Walter Alexanders of Falkirk built a new bus garage at Oakfield Street
1957 - Explosion at Lindsay colliery kills nine mineworkers, and injures 11
1960 - St Joseph's RC Primary School opened
1975 - Kelty Hearts football club founded
Now it's your turn!
That's the briefest of brief summaries, and hardly covers the most important dates. But this is where you come in. There's lots of interest in local history and lots of local knowledge out there - so why not share it here? To add to the time-line, all you have to do is click on the edit button.
Or perhaps you'd like to start your own article about another aspect of Kelty history? You can do that, too. There must also be a wealth of wonderful photographs of old Kelty - maybe even some video of more recent events - and those are more than welcome here.
Post it all here, and let's see if we can really chronicle the history of Kelty in a way we can all share!
