Metal Detecting Enthusiasts in Kelty and around Fife

Anyone got a metal detector and looking for historical sites, try the following in and around Kelty and Dunfermline, Only last week a beginner found 2 million pounds worth of Bronze age gold in a field near Bannockburn, Stirling.now you could be next.It helps to read local historys and research old ordinance maps, you teach yourself history whilst enjoying yourself idea day out for families.

1, Haughs down Black Road, used to be used in late 1700s and early 1800s as shooting range by Fife Militia. was detecting there years ago with Lovet Kemp sadly he passed away years ago a young man, we found musket balls and a badge for Fife Militia there,It was also used for small fairground shows there in late 1800s, and many of couples and families in those days had picnics there, Remember to get permission first from Kemps Farm,

2,Netherton Burn on old North Rd banks of river is great place to detect also was great for picnics in early 1900s,

3,Lassodie is a another great place to metal detect

4,Old bridle paths leading from Blairadam estate down towards Maryburgh is another good place especially where woods surround old school,

5,Old Bridle paths and footpaths from rear of Blairadam house down towards Cleish you pass a house that used to be called the yellow house, it used to store old lead coffins that belonged to DooHill Castle
in 1800s,

6, Seeking permission from Farmer Thompson at Netherton farm, the fields at rear of the farmhouse used to have an army camp there during ww2 Polish paratroopers used to practise and land in fields around there..

7, Ladybank near Annsmuir caravan park and golf course was a  POW camp that german prisoners were kept in during WW2.

8, Balado airfield used to be a fighter station during WW2.

9, Great place to find coins is South Queensferry under the Forth Railway bridge since Bridge was built people in trains have always thrown coins from train windows for luck, due to wind  80% of coinage fell near shore wellingtons is advised to wear, Roman coins also found at the Crammond side.

10, Old Roman Forts in Cleish Hills,

Permission always has to be sought before going on private land and dont destroy arable land by walking over crops, many landowners are happy to allow you as you promise not to leave holes everywhere, there is no need for  holes being left.only those who do that spoil it for others and can be billed if animals break a leg in holes. Good Luck.

I once remember reading about a skirmish between Lindsays and a group of vikings heading inland and they fought on side of Benarty hill on Ballingry end,, also  3 years wages was lost near Scotland well in days of the romans,I think I read it in a book about Agricola a roman general who had a roman fort on Lomond hills,, you have to research to find goodies,,a pal online detects all the old drover roads in Perthshire and found many a bag of coins under tree stumps,, anywhere in Kelty kids and adults would go swimming down the burns such as Netherton Burn and Cantsdam burn kids and parents would swim in 1900s to the 1960s.even used to go myself.and its amazing what drops out yer pockets when changing into swimming pants.
